DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — Decatur Police continue to investigate after an hours-long standoff unfolded Saturday morning.

Just before 6 a.m., the Decatur Police Department received a report that a 31-year-old man threatened to kill his mother and fired a shot at her, according to a release from Lieutenant Erik Ethell.

Ethell said the mother wasn’t hurt and was able to escape the home before she contacted authorities.

When officers arrived at the residence in the 1600 block of N. Morgan, they secured the area and set up a perimeter around it. They then engaged in negotiations with the man.

Several hours later, he exited the home and was taken into custody without incident. He was then taken to a local hospital to be evaluated after threatening to harm himself and others.

Decatur Police said a search warrant was executed, and the investigation is still ongoing with “numerous criminal charges pending.”

“The Decatur Police Department is thankful no one was harmed in this incident,” Ethell added. “We would like to thank the family members who assisted in de-escalation efforts, and for the public’s patience during this resource intensive incident. Additionally, we commend our officers and CIRDC dispatchers for their professionalism handling this dynamic situation.”
