    Update at 8 p.m.

Ameren crews have located the gas leak and stopped it.

Clinton Fire officials said the area has been deemed safe with gas levels not reaching explosive levels.

Crews will remain on site throughout the night to fix the damaged gas line and restore service to homes on Wilmax Drive. The road will be open to traffic.

    Update at 7 p.m.

The fire department said on Facebook they are allowing some traffic through on Wilmax Drive. Officials ask to yield to the side of the road and Ameren will do an air check to ensure it’s safe to proceed.

Ameren workers are still looking for the source of the leak.

    Update at 6 p.m.

Officials with the Clinton Fire Department said Ameren is still looking for the gas leak. They have no estimated time when things will be back to normal.

CLINTON, Ill. (WCIA) — Ameren and the Clinton Fire Department are actively responding to a natural gas line break on U.S. Route 51.

The Fire Department posted on its Facebook page to warn people of the unfolding situation. The break is located at the intersection with Wilmax Drive, and it’s already resulted in a controlled burn by the fire department.

Route 51 is currently down to one lane of southbound traffic until Ameren locates the leak and shuts down the gas line. The fire department is also redirecting school busses that would normally travel to Wilmax.

Children on those routes are being delivered to the Meadowbrook campground, officials said, and they will be walked home through an alternate route by firefighters.

This is a developing story .
