DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — Streets will be improved in the near future in Vermillion County following a grant heading Danville’s way.

Wednesday afternoon, the city of Danville announced that it has been awarded $9,999,900 in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation, in partnership with Vermillion County.

The Safe Streets and Roads for All grant is just part of the efforts started in 2023 by the city, Vermillion County and the Danville Area Transportation Study to develop the Vermilion County Safe Action Plan (VCSAP).

This plan aims to reduce the risk of severe and fatal traffic accidents.

The almost $10M fund will be used to support two main initiatives:

    • Vulnerable Road User Network Upgrades
    • Lane Departure Safety Improvements

The network upgrades are focusing on Seminary Street and Bowman Avenue specifically. Improvements will include installing sidewalks and bike lanes.

These plans aim to promote safety and enhance the overall quality of life for citizens in the community.

The safety improvements will tackle safety concerns in eight separate high-risk areas. A few of these locations include Catlin-Homer Road, Westville Road/Forest Glen Road, Perrysville Road and Kickapoo Park Road.
