EFFINGHAM, Ill. (WCIA) — Camping in public spaces could soon be illegal in Effingham.

It comes following a Supreme Court decision allowing the city to consider the motion. Officials said it was discussed at the last city council meeting. The law would not ban camping on private land or campgrounds, but would on publicly-owned city land.

“City Hall, for example … it wasn’t designed for camping, you know, the facilities that are needed,” said Effingham City Administrator Steve Miller. “We’d rather those, you know, the campers be in campgrounds in areas where there are facilities that can be utilized.”

The council will take formal action next week on October 15th.
