SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — Illinois middle schoolers can soon participate in a national competition showing off their civics knowledge.

Entries for the 2025 National Civics Bee competition are open, testing middle schoolers with questions on civic processes and government.

“Fostering a deep understanding of civics and government among our young students is critical to the vibrancy of democracy and civic life in America,” Hilary Crow, vice president of civics at the U.S. Chamber Foundation said. “The National Civics Bee provides a unique platform for them to not only showcase their knowledge but also become active and engaged citizens of the future.”

The competition starts off with an essay. The 3-question essay prompt asks students to brainstorm solutions to problems in their community. The deadline to submit is February 4, 2025.

After the essays are graded, top students will be invited to regional competitions in the spring. Then the finalists from the local bees will challenge each other in a live quiz event and answer questions in summer 2025 to determine a state champion.

28 states will send a finalist to participate in the national competition in 2025 in Washington DC. The national winner will get $50,000, with each state champion also winning $1,000.

The Civics Bee is organized by the Illinois Chamber of Commerce Foundation, whose leaders said it’s an unique educational experience for students.

“As community leaders, we understand that informed citizens are the backbone of a thriving democracy. The Civics Bee not only encourages knowledge of our state government and civic responsibilities but also fosters engagement among our youth,” Lou Sandoval, President and CEO of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce said. “By investing in civic education, we empower the next generation to be active participants in shaping their communities and ensuring a brighter future for the State of Illinois.”

The inaugural National Civics Bee Championship will take place in Washington DC on November 12, 2024. The general public can sign up to watch a livestream of the championship for free on the U.S. Chamber Foundation’s website .
