(WCIA) — For the first time since 2010, Illinois has won the Purdue cannon at Memorial Stadium.

Illinois took an early lead in the rivalry meeting 10-0 after the first quarter. Josh McCray and Zakhari Franklin saw the endzone in the second for a 24-3 halftime lead.

Purdue threatened Illinois in the second half, including a fumble return touchdown midway through the third, which made it a 27-17 game, then a touchdown with less than two minutes on the clock to cut Illinois’s lead to just five points.

After Purdue got ahead 43-40, Illinois forced overtime with a David Olano field goal. Illinois then scored on the first drive of overtime, as did Purdue. The two-point conversion was no good, and the Illini won 50-49 to reclaim the cannon trophy.
