MONTICELLO, Ill. (WCIA) — One non-profit is doing what they can to further discussions centered around domestic violence and to help victims.

Willow Tree Missions in Monticello has different events planned all month long.

On Monday, families came in to volunteer their services by sorting through household items so they can prepare for donation. On Thursday they’re asking the community to wear purple to show their support for domestic violence victims.

Executive Director of Willow Tree Missions Jill Maxey said their goal is to eliminate domestic violence.

“We are here to serve folks who are going through a domestic violence crisis, and we operate the resale shops to fund the services that we provide,” Maxey said.

They provide help with legal advice, finding shelters and spiritual counseling. So far, they’ve helped more than 115 families this year. But, they aren’t working alone.

“We’ve had over 6,700 hours of volunteer service just this year,” Maxey said.

Cathy Gowen is one of many volunteers who help out Willow Tree Mission. She does it because it makes her feel good by making a difference. This time, she was able to bring her two daughters and teach them about domestic violence.

“I want them to understand that it’s important for them to be part of their community, to give back to their community, that not everyone has a safe place to be,” Gowen said.

Gowen said their conversations are mostly about how Willow Tree Missions help men and women find places to live so they can be safe if they’re facing a domestic violence issue.

“There are people that are struggling. And so, you don’t have to be in Chicago to have to have things going on in your life. And so, I think that it’s really important people understand their resources right here,” Gowen said.

Maxey said the number one goal is doing what they can one step at a time.

“We’re thrilled to be here. We’re a Christian organization. And for us, this is truly living out the mission of serving our neighbor,” Maxey said.

According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, 24 people a minute are victims of rape, physical violence or stalking by a partner. Willow Tree Missions will be selling purple ribbons for $5 all month. They’ll hang them up and dedicate each ribbon to a domestic violence victim.
