MACON COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — Teachers in the Meridian Community Unit School District #15 may soon be on strike.

The Illinois Federation of Teachers (IFT) said that 92% of Meridian Federation voting members agreed the teachers’ bargaining team can call a strike if no significant progress was made in negotiations.

The IFT also said that 90% of members were in attendance for the Tuesday night vote.

“This vote sends a clear message to our administration that Meridian teachers are unified in their resolve to settle a fair contract. There is more work to be done,” MFT President Brian Pekovitch, said. “Of course, no one wants to strike, and we are hopeful that we can come to an agreement. We want to ensure that our district remains strong enough to retain our great teachers. However, if the school board fails to make that commitment, they may give us no choice but to call a strike.”

IFT said the next mediation date has not been set yet.

WCIA reached out to Shane Gordon, superintendent of Meridian Community Unit School District #15 for a statement.

Gordon said the district does not have a statement at this time.

This is a developing story. We will provide updates as we learn more.
