Sangamon Co. Sheriff’s Office hosting Drug Take Back Day

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — Anyone with old medication laying around their house can give it away for a good cause.

On Oct. 26, the Sangamon County Sheriffs Office’s TRIAD and the Drug Enforcement Administration will host DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. DEA and its partners will collect tablets, capsules, patches and other solid forms of prescription drugs.

The event will take place at the Sangamon County Department of Public Health from 10:00 a.m. to 2 p.m.

For over 10 years, this event has helped Americans easily get rid of unneeded medications. Whether they are old, unwanted or expired, they can all still become a gateway to addiction.

Across the country, Take Back Day offers free and anonymous disposal of medications at nearly 5,000 drop-off locations.

In partnership with local law enforcement, this event has removed 9,285 tons of medication from circulation since it started.

However, collection sites are not accepting syringes, sharps and illicit drugs. Liquid products like cough syrup should remain sealed and in their original containers. The cap must be sealed tightly so that it doesn’t leak.
