    BREAKING NEWS: IL State Police Trooper killed in Champaign County crash

    CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — An Illinois State Police Trooper has been pronounced dead after a two-vehicle crash in Champaign County.

    At 8:29 p.m., ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly announced the line-of-duty death of ISP Trooper Corey S. Thompsen.

    State Police said the two-vehicle crash happened around 3:40 p.m. on E. Leverett Road at County Road 1300E near the intersection of Leverett Road and Martin Road. Trooper Thompsen was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital Emergency Department where he succumbed to his injuries at 4:32 p.m.

    “It is with a heavy heart and immeasurable sadness that I inform you of the death of Trooper Corey S. Thompsen,” Kelly said. “We ask the public to give Trooper Thompsen’s family, and his ISP family, time while we grieve and work through this tragedy.”

    Trooper Thompsen was 28 years old and served almost five years as an officer with ISP. He is survived by his wife, mother and father.

    “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Trooper Thompsen and the Illinois State Police family while they work through this tragedy,” said Champaign County Coroner Steve Thuney.

    The details of the crash are still under investigation. The death of Trooper Thompsen is being investigated by the Champaign County Coroner’s Office, Champaign County Sheriff’s Office and the Illinois State Police.
