‘Call if you can, text if you can’t’ in Christian and Shelby Co.

SHELBY COUTNY, Ill. (WCIA) — Residents in two Central Illinois counties are now able to connect with local law enforcement in ways other than phone calls.

According to a Facebook post by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Christian County and Shelby County 911 Centers will be able to communicate with residents through text.

When texting the 911 center, the sheriff’s office said to be aware of your location and the nature of your problem.

They also encouraged residents to still call if they can. But, if residents are not in a position to be able to call, texting is available.

In July 2024, a new law began in Illinois, dictating that all 911 centers must have the ability to accept 911 texts.
