URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) – It was all about the cars, candy and kids on Sunday at Lincoln Square Mall.

Urbana Firefighters Local #1147 hosted their ninth annual trunk or treat. Hundreds of kids and their families showed up — going car to car for candy.

Some of the cars were from local businesses and first responders. Others were just community members passionate about their rides.

Officials said it’s a chance for the people to connect with them in a different way.

“This event gives the kids a safe space to see the first responders that may be at these events, and gives them a safe space to meet us, get the candy [and] have a fun time,” Urbana firefighter Drake Royal said.

Royal helped plan the event this year, and said he can’t wait to outdo himself next year for the 10th anniversary of the event.

At the heart of it all, though, is service. All of the money raised during the event goes directly back into the community to support fire victims and local charities.
