CHAMPAIGN (WCIA) — One of the major changes coming to FBS college football this season is the institution of the helmet communication system allowing coaches to speak directly with select players.

Players with the green dot on their helmet will be equipped with the system that allows them to hear from the sideline. Teams can utilize this technology up until 15 seconds are left on the play clock, or until the ball is snapped.

Illinois QB Luke Altmyer and offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. have gotten acquainted with the new system during fall camp, and are settling in to a new way of relaying play calls.

“Being able to hear the straight up words he can just tell me in my ear to know what I need to do to execute and being able to help my teammates faster is what it’s helped me to do,” Altmyer said.

“It takes some training and it takes some practice. That’s why we’re practicing it, but it’s not super natural, but we’re getting closer to where it’s a way of life for us to be able to do that,” Lunney Jr. said.
