DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala. ( WKRG ) — A 75-year-old man has died after he saved his 5-year-old grandson from drowning, according to the Dauphin Island Police Department.

According to officials, an older brother was able to take the child from the grandfather, but the grandfather couldn’t make it back to the shore.

The grandfather was brought back to the shore by local surfers and was life-flighted to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
