TROY, Ala. (WDHN) — A Pike County jury has found a man guilty of shooting someone in the head during a 2020 drive-by at a Troy apartment complex.

Wadrickus Howard was charged with one count of capital murder in the 2020 murder of Jacoby Cogburn.

According to the Pike County District Attorney’s Office, in July 2020, Howard sat in a car outside of an apartment complex in Troy, waiting for someone to walk out so he could shoot them.

Prosecutors say when the door to the apartment opened and several people walked out, Howard began shooting from the back seat of his vehicle before his co-conspirator drove off. However, instead of hitting the intended target, Cogburn was shot in the head and killed instantly.

Howard was arrested nearly a month later and charged with capital murder.

A release from the Pike County District Attorney’s Office claims that after his arrest, Howard said he did not know about the shooting. During the trial, Howard took the stand and admitted to being present during the shooting, claiming someone else shot first before he opened fire.

A jury was struck in Howard’s trial on Monday, October 7, and he was found guilty three days later.

Howard will be sentenced at a later date.
