DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — A study from Doxo found that Alabama was ranked the #6 cheapest state for household bills, but Dothan was found to be the #31 most expensive city in Alabama across 10 different categories.

To determine how expensive each state in America, and each city in Alabama was, Doxo compared each city’s bill payments for utilities, auto loans, cable bills, and more.

Hawaii was ranked as the most expensive state for household bills, with an average spent per month of $3,091- just for bills. This is 45% higher than the National Average. 94% of all households were spending on average $130 on a mobile phone bill, the most common bill for the state, and 40% were spending on average $2,423 each month on a mortgage, the most expensive bill in the state.

California came just behind Hawaii, as the second most expensive state for household bills. Each month, its residents pay on average $3,010, which is 36% of their average household income. This is 42% higher than the national average. A staggering 98% of all households were spending on average $117 on a mobile phone bill, the most common bill in the entire country, and 38% were spending on average $2,423 each month on a mortgage, the most expensive bill in the state.

In stark contrast, West Virginia was noted as the cheapest state in the country to live in. Each month its residents only spend $1,596 on household bills, but, shockingly, this is still 35% of their household income, leaving even less to save. Still, their household bills put them at 25% below the national average.

Alabama ranked as the #6 cheapest state in America for household bills. Each month, residents in Alabama spend only $1,831 on household bills, which accounts for 36% of their average household income.

So...Dothan is the 31st most expensive city in the 6th cheapest state in the U.S. Some mathematician please calculate how "expensive" Dothan is compared to ....oh...San Diego? Don't bother, I already know. I've lived in both.
