DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — The Montgomery County Animal Resource Center is offering discounted microchipping to keep your pets safe.

Throughout May, pet owners can visit the shelter at 6790 Webster St. in Dayton to have your pet microchipped for just $10. Although a microchip is an optional option for pets to have, it is permanent.

By having your pet microchipped, it is a step in the direction of reuniting lost pets.

“Having pets microchipped is such a simple but significant step toward making sure they get home safe if they ever become lost,” said Debbie Lieberman, president of Montgomery County Commission. “Last year, 10% of the dogs we found were returned home because they were microchipped.”

Amy Bohardt, director of ARC, described the microchipping process, which is quite quick.

“The procedure is simple and consists of injecting a tiny radio-frequency identification implant
under the dog’s skin, between their shoulder blades,” said Bohardt. “No anesthetic is required, and the process takes only seconds.”

When Montgomery County offered the deal in May 2023, Montgomery County Commissioner Carolyn Rice said 61 pets were microchipped.

From Monday to Friday, the shelter is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Saturday, the shelter is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
