DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — A Clark County emergency shelter is reducing their hours of operation.

Sheltered, Inc., a nonprofit organization serving Clark County, reports the family shelter hours have been reduced to 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Recently, the organization cut hours for the men’s shelter to the same.

According to the organization, “financial circumstances” forced the group to make the changes to the operating hours.

“Unfortunately, through no fault of Sheltered, Inc. or OIC, that grant funding has been ended by the state of Ohio,” said Elaina Bradley, executive director of Sheltered, Inc. “We are left with no other option but to reduce the hours of emergency shelter operations and reduce staff.

The organization is currently providing shelter to 59 individuals. If financial circumstances don’t improve, both emergency shelters could shut down by July 1.

In February 2023 , the city of Springfield canceled a contract with the organization for an alleged breach of contract over reported lack of documentation. Sheltered, Inc. says they are disputing the allegations, according to a release.

“Sheltered, Inc. has disputed the allegations and has consistently maintained that all fund reimbursements were done in accordance with all applicable regulations and policies and were proper under Ohio law,” said Sheltered, Inc.

2 NEWS reached out to Clark County and received the following statement:

Sheltered, Inc. came to our meeting this morning to inform us of the situation and spoke about their funding issues, but did not make a specific request.”

and you probably will NOT hear back from Shelters Inc. formally known as Innerfaith Hospitality Network. I have been a client of one of their programs before (a LONG time!) and watched the organization faulter when the previous Director retired. The residents of our program were given less than a month to find new housing when Springfield Metropolitan Housing canceled their lease on our building. That put quite a few of us in a bigger danger and hard times. There were standards that seemed ary to sense, IMHO, and the organization became seemingly a money maker for a few, as good employees either moved on or were let go.... 🤔 Makes ya wonder....
