COLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) — Police have identified a man who died after a barricade standoff that went on all of Sunday morning near Ohio State’s south campus.

Around 8 a.m., Columbus police responded to reports of a burglary in progress at the 1500 block of Worthington Street in the University District, with dispatchers saying shots had been fired into an apartment by a man. The suspect, now identified as 21-year-old Asante Miller, fled the scene when officers arrived.

After he fled the scene, Miller, who was armed, was located nearby. Officers reportedly gave Miller multiple verbal commands to drop his gun and discharged their firearms when he refused.

Officers continued to pursue Miller, who eluded police by forcing his way into a residence at the 100 block of West 8th Avenue. When searching the residence, officers fired additional shots after finding Miller in hiding.

A dispatcher said that the suspect and police exchanged gunfire on two occasions before 9 a.m. but the suspect nor any officers were injured in those encounters. The standoff lasted more than five hours, with Miller pronounced dead at 1:15 p.m., per a police dispatcher. It is currently unclear how Miller died.
