DARKE COUNTY, Ohio ( WDTN ) — A mosquito in Arcanum has tested positive for West Nile Virus.

The Darke County General Health District has tested a sample and identified one mosquito positive for West Nile Virus. The sample was collected on Aug. 6 from a trap located at the Arcanum Community Baseball Park.

The positive sample was identified by the Ohio Department of Health on Aug. 14.

Not all repellents are equal – here’s how to avoid mosquito bites this summer

Health officials want to remind the public to take precautions against mosquito bites as summer transitions into fall.

Individuals can minimize exposure to mosquitos and prevent bites in several ways:

    • Apply bug repellants registered with the EPA.
    • Wear light colors and long sleeves and pants.
    • Get rid of mosquito breeding sites by emptying or treating any standing water on your property.
    • Make sure screens on windows and doors are free of holes or rips to keep mosquitos outdoors.
    • Keep swimming pool water treated & circulating. Keep empty and covered when not in use.
    • Ensure roof gutters drain properly & clean clogged gutters in the spring & fall.

West Nile Virus is most commonly spread by infected mosquitos, and can lead to fever and inflammation of the brain and spinal cord. Approximately 80% of people who are infected will not show symptoms, but there is no way to tell in advance if you will develop an illness or not.

The DCGHD will continue to sample this location and other locations throughout the summer.

For any questions, call the health department Monday through Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 937-548-4196 ext. 225 or 233.
