DAYTON, Ohio ( WDTN ) — Firefighters were sent to a home in New Carlisle for an explosion.

According to Clark County Communications, crews were called out to a house in the 500 block of Church Street for a fire with heavy smoke and flames. Dispatchers say the home experienced an explosion around 3:20 p.m.

Dispatchers told 2 NEWS that everyone was evacuated from the home.

When firefighters arrived, they found the house engulfed in flames. As crews fought the fire and moved inside, there was another explosion.

New Carlisle Fire Chief Steve Trusty showed 2 NEWS one of the helmets a firefighter was wearing.

“This helmet was bright red before today, this shield is melted off,” said Trusty. “The second explosion happened which, the fire rolled over top of the crews. The only thing they could do was get down, back out and regroup. And then go back in.”

One person was transported to a local hospital for minor burns.

Fire crews from Huber Heights, New Carlisle, Elizabeth Township, Pike Township and Bethel Township responded to the scene.

The home is considered a total loss, with the cause of the fire still under investigation.

Firefighters risk their lives for us. This was an incredibly dangerous situation. They did not know if there was going to be another explosion, but they went back in, anyway. God bless them.
