DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Poll workers were in short supply during March’s primary elections in Ohio. With less than three months until the general election – including for president – the need for poll workers grows.

Both Montgomery and Miami counties said they expect a large turnout, and poll workers will be essential to handle the large load of voters.

Both Board of Election offices said they are confident in getting the required amount of poll workers all set before Election Day on Nov. 5. But they didn’t deny that having more can be key to handle those eager to cast their votes.

They both said that they have calls out to registered poll workers, as well as those who have volunteered previously. Both board offices expect their voting locations to be fully staffed.

With the presidential race almost certain to drive traffic to polls, the boards of election said that more workers can make the difference between a citizen having an easy time voting and having to wait in a long line.

Those interested in volunteering should call their respective Board of Elections office. Even if polls meet their minimum required numbers, don’t expect to be turned away if you want to help out on Election Day.

“We could always use more,” said Jannelle Flaherty, Miami County election administrator. “It’s nice when you are talking a big election to have 10-15 people back up.

“We prefer to have 450 to be an ideal number so we can have 25 for each location on standby.”

Both Montgomery and Miami county boards ask that voters be mindful of the Oct. 7 deadline to register to vote.
