HUBER HEIGHTS, Ohio ( WDTN ) — A group in Huber Heights is petitioning to put a recent resolution into the hands of voters.

Residents are speaking up after Huber Heights City Council passed a resolution to approve the annexation of 296 acres of Bethel Township . The annexation would allow a housing development to build approximately 1400 new homes.

Talks of the annexation have been going on for years , with the annexation approval passed on July 22. Now, a committee of local residents has come together, requesting the matter be put on the ballot.

The “Building a Better Community with Neighbors PAC” is petitioning Huber Heights City Council to initiate a referendum, allowing residents to vote on whether they want the annexation or not.

Members of the committee canvassed neighborhoods and held signature collection events throughout Huber Heights on Saturday. If enough signatures are collected, the resolution could end up on the November ballot.

They say every citizen should have a chance to voice their opinions on this matter.

“This is an opportunity for those folks that feel like they were not heard to actually be heard at a level that takes out any local politics,” said Frank Wylie, resident. “It just puts it right out there on the ballot and lets you stand up individually and say yes or no. This is very important in the process to show you that you do have a voice. It does matter.”

Additional petition events will be held throughout the weekend and next week. The group has until Thursday to collect 2300 signatures from Huber Heights residents in both Montgomery and Miami counties.
