DAYTON, Ohio ( WDTN ) — Scam calls are nothing new, but law enforcement is once again warning against sharing personal information over the phone.

The Centerville Police Department put an alert out regarding a recent scammer they’ve been made aware of. Some local residents are receiving calls from a caller claiming to be with the police.

The scammer poses as an officer in an attempt to gain personal information, specifically social security numbers. Residents who’ve reported the scam say the caller speaks with an accent and identifies himself as Sergeant Wilson.

Centerville PD warns that the caller ID has been edited to look like the call is coming from police.

If you aren’t sure if the call is real, or something seems suspicious, hang up the phone and call the police department yourself at 937-433-7661.
