DAYTON, Ohio ( WDTN ) — Madison Lakes in Trotwood is known for its beautiful views, but a recent tragedy has been a stark reminder of why there is no swimming allowed in the lake.

For the first time, cameras have gone into the restricted area of the lake to show just how dangerous those waters can be.

According to Trotwood Fire and Rescue, the lake has sudden drop-offs, and people can get tangled in underwater debris and vegetation.

Several tree stumps have been cut just above the water line that cannot easily be seen.

If there is an actual emergency, response times may be slow due to first responders having to carry equipment through a hilly, uneven trail inaccessible by vehicle.

Ralph Bowman with Trotwood Fire and Rescue said no one should risk their life by swimming in the lake.

“No matter how much we try to stress no swimming, every year somebody comes out here and every year we’re out here for an injury or an overdose or someone has as went missing swimming and has drowned,” said Bowman.

Last week, 19-year-old Luis Hondureno disappeared in the lake after swimming with four friends. His body was recovered three days later.
