DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — The University of Dayton has announced cuts that are expected to occur for the upcoming academic year.

Citing “responsible financial management,” UD has made the decision to shut down low-enrollment programs and cut positions for the next academic year. The university said in information obtained by 2 NEWS that the school is not in a deficit, but needs to make changes for the state of the budget.

“While our credit ratings are strong and our long-term assets, including our restricted endowment, are healthy, these are not appropriate to use as long-term solutions to offset pressures on our annual operating budget and improve an uncomfortably thin operating margin,” said UD. “We must bring our expenses in line with the realities of the current market.”

UD reports 20 masters and three doctorate programs will not be offered during the 2025-2026 school year. The educational facility claims an average of four or less students are enrolled in some, while an average of one or less are offered in others.

It is reported that the school will eliminate positions of professional faculty, but an exact number has not yet been determined.

“While we have reduced our employee count through natural attrition and incentives, further action is necessary,” said UD. “Deferring these decisions puts our mission at risk and only results in larger reductions later, impacting more faculty and staff.”

All impacted staff members will be notified by March 15, 2025.
