DAYTON, Ohio ( WDTN ) — The Dayton Department of Water just received a first-in-the-state certification from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA).

Following the completion of requirements, OEPA has certified the city of Dayton’s Department of Water for testing for PFAS. Dayton is the first municipal or commercial laboratory in the state to receive this certification.

In 2023, the Dayton laboratory analyzed over 400 samples. It’s on target to analyze the same number of samples in 2024, which will likely increase once a new treatment facility is built .

The Dayton lab can now also analyze outside samples, allowing the city to monetize the capabilities amidst analytical capacity shortages nationwide. The average cost of testing one PFAS sample can range from $600 to $800.

In April, the Biden administration set the first-ever national limits for toxic and pervasive “forever chemicals” in drinking water.

Dayton has more than 500 groundwater monitoring wells placed around the City’s water production wells and wellfields used to identify groundwater contaminants.
