DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Yesterday residents met at a solidarity rally in Dayton.

Stories, concerns, calls to action were voiced from members of the community.

“I awoke to robocalls and mass texts from my hospital, advising employees of a code black, a bomb threat,” said nurse Lauren Morisseau at the rally.

The meeting followed days of threats placed against schools, hospitals and city offices in Springfield, as well as months of detrimental rhetoric towards members of the immigrant community.

Attendees at the park Sunday afternoon agreed that changes were necessary.

“Rejecting that kind of discourse begins with actions like this,” said Dr. Xavier Johnson.

So, at Bomberger Park, community members advocated for those changes, many hoping for a peaceful address of everything that’s happened recently and over the last few months. to be made in support of the Haitian population in Springfield.

“As long as we are fair, you know,” said resident Jehanne Dufersne. “We all have to be accountable no matter what party you’re in. It’s just, we want to welcome everybody.”

Morisseau wants to see a perspective shift take place.

“I want to see an embrace. Human migration isn’t new. People have always moved and there have always been waves of immigrants coming,” Morisseau said. “Welcome them, volunteer on their behalf, advocate for more resources sent by the government to Springfield so that we can welcome them well, so that we can build and grow, all together and revitalize the city and make sure this community stays safe.”

City leaders and law enforcement officials in Dayton have also spoken out, denying that there have been instances of cat-eating on behalf of the local immigrant community.

Dayton Police Department Chief Kamran Afzal issued a statement, which was posted on social media on Saturday.

The Dayton Police Department strongly refutes the irresponsible information being put out on social media or other avenues about our immigrant community. We stand by our immigrant community and there is no evidence to even remotely suggest that any group, including our immigrant community, is engaged in eating pets. Seeing politicians or other individuals use outlandish information to appeal to their constituents is disheartening.”
