Goddard, Cortner sentenced to life in prison for murder of Detective Del Rio

DAYTON, Ohio ( WDTN ) — The two men charged with the killing of Dayton Police Detective and DEA Task Force Officer Jorge Del Rio were sentenced on Monday.

Four months after receiving guilty verdicts, Nathan Goddard was sentenced to life in prison plus 10 years. Cahke Cortner was sentenced to life in prison plus five years.

The prosecution and defense classified one of the sentences as “extreme.”

Both Cortner and Goddard were involved in a drug raid by Dayton police in 2019 where Det. Del Rio was shot and killed.

Cortner was found guilty of supplying the firearm Goddard used to shoot Det. Del Rio. Goddard received four concurrent life sentences for four charges, including obtaining with the attempt to sell narcotics, attempt to distribute, intent to distribute said narcotics and intentional killing.

He also received two 120-month sentences for two other charges.

The defense says this sentencing is not necessary for the situation. However, the presiding judge says the extreme sentence is to deter future crimes like this.

The Del Rio family shared their reaction to the sentencing, and how they’re finally ready to move forward.

“We’re more than thankful for the outcome of this whole situation and we’re glad that everything is said and done and over with. It’s such a relief,” said Kathy Del Rio, Det. Del Rio’s wife.

Both are expected to begin those sentences immediately. According to the judge, the court desires that Goddard is never released from prison.
