HAMILTON COUNTY, Ohio (WDTN) — A portion of Hamilton County has been ordered to evacuate their area.

According to the Hamilton County Emergency Management, a “dangerous chemical leak” is forcing people in a 0.5 mile radius of the area of S.R. 128 and U.S. 50 near Cleves to evacuate.

WLWT in Cincinnati reports a train did not derail, but rather a train car valve was releasing styrene gas. According to The Ohio State University, the gas is clear and colorless. OSU also describes the gas having a “sweet smell.”

Individuals are asked to leave the affected area as soon as possible.

“LEAVE THE AREA IMMEDIATELY within a half mile radius of the railyard by US 50, OH 128, and Valley Junction Road, near the Kroger at 4001 Hamilton Cleves Road due to dangerous chemical leak,” said Hamilton County Emergency Management.

Residents within that area who can not leave have been asked to do the following:

    • Stay inside
    • Close and seal off doors and windows
    • Close fireplace dampers
    • Turn off heat

People needing shelter should go to 6125 Dry Fork Road.
