KETTERING, Ohio ( WDTN ) — Students at Kettering Fairmont High School faced a frightening situation Tuesday morning as a reported “religious activist” shouted offensive statements as they walked into class.

Amidst several threat hoaxes, school safety has become a rising concern for school officials and parents alike.

A man stood on Shroyer Road and used a bullhorn to shout derogatory statements against the LGBTQ+ community. The incident was caught on cell phone camera by families dropping their kids off at school for the day. One parent confronted the man as he continued to create a scene.

The man was not arrested but was asked to leave the premises. One parent told 2 NEWS after her child went inside, she was not leaving until the man was gone.

“And I said, well, we can’t leave until we know our kids are safe. And I said, are all the doors locked at Fairmont? And they said, absolutely,” said Aimee Butts, parent.

In a statement sent to parents shortly after the incident, Kettering City Schools Superintendent Mindy McCarty-Stewart addressed the incident and commended their students for remaining composed while it happened.

With many districts in the Miami Valley being targets of false threats, parents say they are now more concerned about sending their kids to school.

“You never know what people are going to do. They’re kind of just looking at them like, what is he doing out here? What is he going to do? Like, is this going to be a situation type of thing? So it was a little scary,” said Allison Adams, parent.

The school says they are working with local law enforcement to address this incident. Counseling is available for students who would like to speak to someone.
