DPD: Mother killed in backseat of car was innocent bystander in ‘ongoing dispute’

DAYTON, Ohio ( WDTN ) — Dayton Police credited technology, as well as old-fashioned police work, with the arrest of a suspect in Saturday’s shooting death of a mother .

Jerma Lyle, 26, was fatally shot Saturday morning while sitting in the back seat of a car with her 4-year-old daughter on US-35 between I-75 and James H. McGee Boulevard.

A 23-year-old male suspect was arrested Wednesday.

Maj. Brian Johns with Dayton Police Investigations credited both the Flock camera-sharing network and National Integrated Ballistic Information Network run by the ATF for helping solve the case.

NIBIN allows law enforcement agencies across the nation to input gun ballistics, such as identifiable marks on slugs, and compare them to a database to learn where else the firing weapon may have been used and by whom.

Johns said that thanks to Flock cameras, police were able to recover both the blue Impala the suspect allegedly fired from. The weapon was also recovered.

Johns said the suspect would be charged either later Thursday or Friday.

According to Johns, the investigation showed that Lyle was not an intended target. The suspect had allegedly been in an ongoing dispute with the person in the front passenger seat of the vehicle Lyle and her daughter were in.

The suspect allegedly had the driver of the Impala follow Lyle’s vehicle from the airport south on I-75 to the US-35 off-ramp where the suspect, from the car’s passenger seat, opened fire.
