GREENE COUNTY, Ohio (WDTN) — The Greene County Sheriff’s Office is urging that residents be wary of scam calls that are impersonating members of law enforcement.

The office posted on social media to warn of fraudulent telephone scams on the rise throughout the county.

The scammer calls the local resident, acting as a member of the Greene County Sheriff’s Office. The scammer tells the resident that there is an active warrant for their arrest. The scammer may then say that paying an undefined financial sum may reduce the amount. The scammer will ask for payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfer or P2P.

The sheriff’s office will never call to alert of a warrant or to charge payment. The office advises that residents hang up the phone if they receive a call like this and report it to local police.
