WHITEWATER TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WDTN) — People are now allowed to return to their homes after a toxic chemical was released from a train car.

Hamilton County Emergency Management updated residents on the evening of Sept. 25 relating to the evacuation order caused by the release of Styrene gas, a toxic chemical, on Sept. 24. Officials lifted the order Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., allowing businesses and residents in the Cleves and Whitewater Township area to open back up for business and return back home.

Upon returning home, officials recommended people wash any clothing or bedding left out. Any food items, plants and pet food believed to have been exposed should be thrown away, according to the Ohio Department of Agriculture.

Leaders also suggests people to take measures to conduct additional cleaning.

“Surfaces in your home should be wiped down,” said a release. “The Ohio Department of Agriculture also recommends that, out of an abundance of caution, residents change HVAC filtration.”

Businesses and homes were forced to evacuate and close for the day on Tuesday afternoon.

Roads within a half-mile radius of U.S. 50, State Route 128 and Valley Junction Road were closed. All roadways have reopened.
