PIQUA, Ohio ( WDTN ) — Local rest areas along I-75 will be closed for approximately a year while construction crews upgrade the facilities.

The Ohio Department of Transportation has announced the closure of rest areas on I-75 through Miami County, beginning Friday, Oct. 11. While the rest areas are closed, they will be demolished and replaced with new facilities.

Bridge over I-75 will be closed until Fall 2025

This closure will affect rest areas on both north- and southbound I-75. The rest areas are located just south of Piqua, with the northbound rest area at Mile Marker 80.16 and the southbound at Mile Marker 80.1.

The rest areas will be demolished and then replaced with new facilities, as part of ODOT’s statewide rest area upgrade project. Construction is expected to take approximately one year to complete.

Demolition will take place throughout the winter months, before construction begins on the new building. The new facilities are expected to open in fall 2025.

Once completed, drivers can expect a new lodge-style building with everything under one roof — including larger restrooms with adult changing tables, a lobby with vending machines and regional tourism info and attached, covered outdoor picnic areas. The grounds around the building will feature landscaping with native plants to Ohio.

The nearest rest areas on I-75 are located just north of Wapakoneta.

This rest area upgrade is part of Ohio’s statewide initiative to build new rest area facilities across 17 locations. Gov. Mike DeWine announced the project in spring 2023.
