DAYTON, Ohio ( WDTN ) — Banks and businesses in Ohio have just under a month to report unclaimed funds to the Department of Commerce.

Ohio Revised Code 169.03 requires all companies doing business in the state to report any unclaimed funds so the Division of Unclaimed Funds can safeguard them. Reports are due by Nov. 1 and can be submitted online following a four-step process.

Bridge over I-75 will be closed until Fall 2025

The first step is to identify inactive accounts, usually for a period of three to five years. Owners of this forgotten money must be contacted with an OUF-8 Notice Letter. Then, businesses must create an Unclaimed Funds Report and submit both the report and funds.

    Examples of unclaimed funds include:

    • Inactive checking and savings accounts
    • Refund/credit balances
    • Uncashed cashier’s checks
    • Stocks and bonds
    • Utility deposits
    • Last paychecks

Curious if you have unclaimed funds? Ohioans can search for and claim their money free of charge by searching unclaimedfunds.ohio.gov , gathering supporting documents, and sending the information to the division online or via mail.

This is the last year paper reports will be accepted due to a system upgrade set to take place in 2025. The division currently manages around $4.3 billion in unclaimed funds.
