DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — As children begin choosing their Halloween costumes, the Cleveland Clinic is providing tips to parents to ensure a safe night of tricks and treats.

As the sun does down while kids are on the roads trick or treating, it is important to consider not selecting a costume that has a dark color. The dark-colored clothing and accessories could make it more difficult to see trick-or-treaters, especially while crossing the street.

To be more visible, you might want to add reflective tape to your child’s costume to be proactive so that they can be seen as the sun fades into the evening. Children and parents might also consider carrying flashlights as an added measure of visibility.

Although kids may want to wear a mask with their costume, the Clinic suggests parents contemplate painting their child’s face and leaving the mask at home. According to the Clinic, face paint can provide your child with better sight compared to a face mask.

Sometimes on the night of trick or treating, Ohio has experienced rainy and snowy conditions with cold temperatures. If it is chilly or cold outside, parents may think about adding extra layers, such as a sweatshirt or coat, to their child’s costume to stay warm.
