Fire in Your Flip-Flops? Venomous Fireworms Invade Texas Beaches!

There is a new danger terrorizing beaches in Texas. The Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico studies at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi warns about fireworms washing up on Texas beaches. Fireworms look like pipe cleaners, as they are covered in hair. Their bustles are hollow and full of venom.

The venomous creatures can cause pain that lasts for hours. They may also cause dizziness and confusion. Jake Tunnel, director of community engagement for the HRI says, "The reason it's called a fireworm is because when it stings you it feels like fire if you touch it, it can get stuck in your skin very easily and it causes massive pain for about three hours."

There have not been any reports of the nasty little worms causing any fatalities, but you do not want to come into contact with them. If you have an unfortunate encounter, Tunnel recommends you remove the bristles by putting duct tape over the area and ripping the bristles out of the affected area. You might also try rinsing the area with vinegar and warm water.
