Texas offers some of the most pristine and scenic areas in the United States. From the Coastal Bend to the Big Bend, Texas has a unique topography. As many residents of the great state of Texas know, there is not enough public land. The majority of Texas' lands are private.

Texas Parks and Wildlife seeks to increase public land by the addition of a new 2,300-acre state park. Powderhorn State Park is planned to provide access to Powderhorn Wildlife Management Area, Powderhorn Lake, and Matagorda Bay. The area is characterized by freshwater and brackish wetlands, coastal prairies, and mature live oak forests.

At this stage, Texas Parks and Wildlife is still in the planning stages and is seeking your input. They are hosting a second round of public meetings to solicit feedback from the public concerning the use and planning for this new state park. There is no current plan or timeline for the opening of this new park.

A new release states, "In 2014, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation announced the purchase of the 17,351-acre Powderhorn Ranch for $37.7 million. It was the largest conservation investment in Texas history"

The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 25, 2024, in Port Lavaca. For more information, visit the Texas Parks and Wildlife website using the link below. You may also call their office at (512)389-4356 to contact Justin Fleury.

What do you think of the addition of this new state park? Let us know in the comments.
