Athena Comments On Being Used In ROH Instead Of AEW

Over the past year, Athena has only appeared for AEW three times, instead working for their sister promotion, ROH, where she is currently the promotions Women’s World Champion. And now, ahead of her match with Queen Aminata at Death Before Honor, she has spoken to Stephanie Chase , with the former WWE talent revealing her absence from AEW is by design, as she doesn’t want to get lost in the shuffle with the company already having such a notable women’s roster.

“It’s something that Tony and I talk about quite a bit in person. It’s like, we did Battle of the Belts, we’re sprinkling it here and there. We’ve done pre-shows on multiple pay-per-views. I think it’s just a matter of time. ut right now I feel like we have Mercedes Moné, we have Brit Baker, we have Hikaru Shida, we have Toni Storm, we have Mariah May, it’s a little congested right now and I don’t want to come into a scene that is congested and get lost in the shuffle as well.”

Athena had a six-year run in WWE as Ember Moon, which saw her win the NXT Women’s Championship and NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship with Shotzi Blackheart. Yet, the company would release her in November 2021 due to budgetary cuts. Still considering her talent, it was always assumed she’d eventually sign with AEW, and thus, while her debut at Double or Nothing in 2022 delighted fans, it didn’t come as a huge surprise.
