Tony Khan Shuts Down Journalist That Called The FTW Championship “A Bit Of A Joke”

Hook made his history when he won the FTW Championship for a record third time during All In on Sunday. However, rather than using the post-show press conference to ask Hook about his notable victory over Chris Jericho, journalist Sam Smith of Wrestlesphere would actually insult the title, calling it “ a bit of a joke. ” This would clearly irritate both Hook and Tony Khan, with AEW’s head honcho firing back, saying he “ brought it in as a really important part of the company ” and going on to explain the history of the championship AEW.

The FTW Championship was initially created by Hook’s father, Taz, in ECW as part of a storyline where he couldn’t get a title shot at then-ECW Champion Shane Douglas. While it was officially unrecognized by ECW, it was treated as a legitimate alternative to the promotions top belt. Therefore, why Smith felt it was a joke title is unclear and shows a severe lack of wrestling knowledge.
