While Double or Nothing was a fantastic pay-per-view showcasing everything AEW has come to be known for, the shine was taken off the event after it was confirmed Adam Copeland had suffered a broken tibia. This occurred during his barbed wire cage match with Malakai Black when the WWE Hall of Famer performed an elbow drop from the top of the cage and landed badly. Subsequently, the day after the event, Copeland would announce on social media he required surgery and noted, “ I’m 50, and I need to make better choices.

Although with photos now being shared on social media of Copeland in the gym, fans have already begun speculating that his return to the ring could be imminent. Yet, it seems that is premature, as Copeland has disclosed during a new interview with Sports Illustrated that he doesn’t have a timeframe as he still has more work to do rehabbing.

“It feels really good. I got the surgery. I guess it was June 1st by the time I finally got the surgery done … I don’t know what a timeframe is. I don’t know any of that. I know that now I can walk, get in the ring, and move around a little bit, but I still feel the deficiency. So, I know I still have some work to do to return to where I need to be.”

Copeland’s departure from WWE last September was a bold career move, as, despite their offer of a new deal, he chose to leave, driven not by money but by the promise of more creative freedom in AEW. This decision led to a highly praised program with his real-life best friend, Christian Cage, over the TNT Championship, with their efforts elevating the title’s reputation. However, given Copeland’s injury, he would have to give up the belt, leaving fans wondering who he would have defended it against at All In had he still been champion.
