On Thursday, news broke that Wesley Eisold of the punk rock group American Nightmare had filed a lawsuit against Cody Rhodes, WWE, and Fanatics for breach of contract and trademark infringement. According to legal documents, the musician registered the trademark in 2016, and once Rhodes wanted to use it himself, he paid Eisold $30,000 and agreed his name or image would be included on merchandise to ensure there was no confusion for fans.

However, Eisold claims that WWE and Fanatics failed to do this, and thus, he is seeking damages. And now, after some fans began attacking him online and accusing him of trying to extort money, he has taken to social media platform X himself and fired back by calling them “ f*cking dolts.

“Listen you f*cking dolts. I already own the name. Doesn’t matter who you like. They licensed it from me. Then violated that agreement.”

Second-generation wrestler Cody Rhodes started using the name “American Nightmare” as a play on his father Dusty Rhodes’ well-known nickname “American Dream” after being encouraged by New Japan. Yet, it should be noted that his older brother Dustin actually used it himself in the ’90s and has previously stated he signed the rights over to Cody, seemingly indicating this legal situation is anything but straightforward.
