The pro wrestling world was shaken on May 23, 1999, when Owen Hart fell and died while making his entrance from the rafters at Over The Edge. This would see WWE’s then-head honcho Vince McMahon heavily criticized for continuing the pay-per-view following the terrible incident, and subsequently, no replay was aired.

However, having proclaimed during his “Mr. McMahon” Netflix docuseries that he stands by his decision, Owen’s widow Martha has issued a statement to DailyHive.com . In this, she shares her frustration with the tragedy being treated as “ a mere accident ” and reveals that the producers never contacted her.

“Netflix’s Mr. McMahon documentary series portrays the death of my husband, Owen Hart, as a mere accident. It also allows the disgraced former owner and CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), Vince McMahon, to claim that Owen’s death ‘wasn’t our fault.’ Nothing could be further from the truth.

The real truth is that on May 23rd, 1999, out of a desire to cut costs and achieve a ‘quick release’ effect that a rigging expert specifically warned against, WWE hired unqualified riggers to arrange a stunt in which Owen was to rappel from the rafters during a wrestling event … To be clear, no one involved in the making of this documentary attempted to contact me for comment or to obtain an accurate perspective. I continue to hold WWE and its then-management responsible for Owen’s death. I refuse to let Vince McMahon or anyone else rewrite that history.”

Following McMahon’s departure from WWE earlier this year, there has been some speculation that Owen could eventually be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, as Martha had previously prevented his inclusion. Yet, even if it doesn’t happen, Owen has at least received recognition for his contributions to the business via AEW, which established both a men’s and women’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament back in 2022, which is now an annual occurrence.
