WEBB CITY, MO — It’s been just over two years since Webb City native and Missouri Southern alum Logan VanWey signed a free agent deal with the Houston Astros.

Fast forward to now, He has worked his way up through the minors to playing Triple-A ball.

Logan VanWey said, “We knew that was a good thing from the Astros, thinking I could throw in Double A. Thinking I can move up that fast. You know, most people develop for several years in Low-A High-A and being a bullpen guy, you know, you kind of get the move up faster. It’s kind of like a sink or swim situation. But, you know, I show them I can pitch in whatever situation they throw me in”.

Logan is currently one of the top prospects in the Astros organization and pitches with their Triple-A affiliate down in Sugar Land, Texas.

He has posted a 6-1 overall record with four saves. But being at this stage is something more than he could have ever imagined.

VanWey said, “It’s a surreal feeling, you know. There’s several moments in my career so far where it’s kind of like, man, like this is kind of what I’ve been dreaming of. This is what I’ve been working so hard for. And it’s finally happening. Like one of those moments where I was offered a contract. It was like, Wow. Like you had always wondered how you would feel and kind of always dreamt of like, what am I going to do in this situation happens Or when you’re offered a contract and you get offered it and you’re like, Oh my God, Like, this is everything I’ve worked for. This is pretty good feeling”.

Being one step away from the majors, to Logan, it’s about sending a message to kids that no matter where you come from, anything’s possible if you want it bad enough.

VanWey said, “I’m from Webb City. I went to Missouri Southern, and now I have a chance to make the big leagues. You know, like anywhere you go, any situation you’re in, if you work hard enough, you can. You can make it, which is pretty cool. But, you know, it means a lot to me to be able to think that I’m helping grow the game and, you know, be a good role model for the kids around here”.

While his journey has been memorable so far. Getting to the show will be one that will top them all.

When the time comes for you to receive that call, that you’re headed up to Houston, what are going to be those first emotions?

VanWey said, “I’ve seen a couple of my buddies get that call so far, which, you know, really happy for them. It’s a cool moment to share with them, but I think I’m going to probably give myself a couple of minutes to cry just because that last moment of going to the big leagues is going to be the one to remember and I’ll be excited to call my friends and family and, you know, tell them that I’m going to go up”.

Logan said the team he currently pitches for in Sugar Land is having a great season and their goal is to go out and win a championship.
