Alex Cora dismisses notion Red Sox brass prefer to sell, believes recent success is sustainable

Two weeks ago, Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that the window was open for the team to prove they are contenders. Now?

“[The window] is bigger,” Cora said Wednesday on WEEI’s “Jones & Mego.”

The Red Sox have won six of their last seven games and are 17-7 since June 11 – entering Tuesday 10 games above .500 and firmly in the third wild-card spot in the American League.

But the question remains whether or not the Red Sox will be buyers at the trade deadline – something Cora has been vocal about but the front office, led by Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow, has remained non-committal.

“I had a conversation with Craig three days ago, this whole thing with ownership and front office that they want to lose so we can trade people to improve the future of the organization, I think it’s wrong,” Cora said. “We just gotta be patient. We put ourselves in a great position. Ten games over .500 is important. We talked about it two weeks ago: win this series. Win the next one. Look around the league we’ve been one of the best teams in the big leagues the last month and a half. … We believe in what we’re doing and just have to be patient.”

The key for Boston will be to continue to show it is for real. They finish the first half with two more games against the lowly A’s before hosting the Kansas City Royals.

They entered Tuesday just 3.5 games behind the Yankees for the top wild card spot, but Cora has his eyes a little bigger and for good reason.

“Is this sustainable? I believe so,” Cora said. “The brand of baseball we’re playing now offensively we can do a lot of things. The pitching is better than the last two years. …. Big series against big teams in the division. Great on the road. Good in the division. Okay at Fenway. I feel like whatever window it was two weeks ago, now it’s bigger. …we’re six-and-a-half games behind Baltimore. Think big and see what happens.”
