    Is Bill Belichick done coaching?

Bill Belichick’s semi-unceremonious dismissal from the New England Patriots at the end of this past NFL season was expected to begin a new era for the greatest coach of all time.

Like Tom Brady before him, Belichick was expected to find a new home (and a new sleeveless hoodie) and start coaching elsewhere. But the hiring cycle came and went without a job offer for Belichick.

Since then, Belichick has accepted a steady stream of high-profile media jobs, including reportedly becoming a regular contributor to ESPN’s The Pat McAfee Show and the Monday Night Football ‘Manningcast’ in the fall. Add in last week’s announcement that he’ll be joining the CW's Inside the NFL and Belichick seems fully committed to sports media.

But will he re-enter the coaching world to chase Don Shula’s all-time wins record he seemingly wants (or wanted ) so badly?

On Monday’s edition of The Greg Hill Show on WEEI, Chris Curtis argued why Belichick will return to coaching. Listen to the entire segment above.

“Maybe nobody who has ever lived has a better historical understanding of their place in the history of the NFL,” Curtis said.

“He remembers Don Shula on Monday Night Football cheering against the Patriots in ‘07 trying to protect his perfect Dolphins season. I believe he wants to pass Shula.”

Courtney Cox took the other side, believing that Belichick’s recent calmer demeanor since taking on a role in the media means he won’t return to coaching.

“I just don’t see it happening,” Cox said. “I think this guy looks so happy, so refreshed.”

Cox also believes that Belichick’s age (he turned 72 in April) may be another reason why he doesn’t decide to return to coaching following his time in the media.

“There can be a time where you’re up there in age. 72 is not a young chicken,” Cox said.

Cox said that Belichick may not want to “uproot” his life at 72 to coach in places like Florida, DC, or Cincinnati.

“He has $30 million in the bank for doing nothing and he’s got a TV job set up. I think he’s living the life right now, without the stress of people saying every single day, ‘He’s lost his fastball,’” Cox said.

Curtis also touched on how Belichick’s absence from the NFL coaching landscape this season could negatively affect the Patriots.

“I believe this year Bill not coaching is the worst possible outcome for Robert Kraft and Jerod Mayo,” Curtis said.

Curtis believes that if Belichick were coaching a middling team—like the Falcons, for example—his lack of success on that team would make the Patriots look better for firing him.

“Now Bill’s perfect, he gets to do what he’s always been brilliant at but he’s always done it in front of his players, not the media: break down other people’s mistakes on film,” Curtis said.

“He’s going to be doing that on Pat McAfee while Jacoby Brisett and Scott Van Pelt’s brother are stumbling down the field, we’re only going to remember the good times of Bill and we’re going to see in real time, in living color, the mistakes the Patriots and other teams make.”
