One day after acquiring starting pitcher James Paxton from the Dodgers, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has made another trade.

As ESPN’s Jeff Passan first reported and as the Red Sox confirmed later Saturday, Boston has acquired catcher Danny Jansen from Toronto in exchange for minor-league infielders Cutter Coffey and Eddinson Paulino and minor-league pitcher Gilberto Batista.

Jansen has appeared in 61 games this season and is hitting .212 with six home runs, 18 RBIs and a .671 OPS in 228 plate appearances.

That represents a down season after he topped 15 home runs in each of the previous two seasons while posting a combined OPS of .817.

Jansen could supplant Reese McGuire as Boston’s backup catcher behind Connor Wong, but it remains to be seen exactly what his role will be for the rest of the season. Jansen, 29, is on a one-year contract and is set to be a free agent after the season.

Jansen is a right-handed bat, but he probably won’t do a whole lot to address the Red Sox’s issues against left-handed pitching, as he actually has better splits against righties than lefties throughout his career.

Of the three prospects the Red Sox gave up, Paulino was ranked the highest by SoxProspects.com , who had him 15th in the system. The 22-year-old was hitting .263 with three home runs, 35 RBIs, 10 steals and a .740 OPS in 69 games (278 plate appearances) for Double-A Portland this season.

Coffey was ranked 28th. The 20-year-old has a .238 average, 14 home runs, 46 RBIs and .784 OPS in 61 games (271 plate appearances) for High-A Greenville. SoxProspects did not have the 19-year-old Batista ranked among the top 40 prospects in the system.
