Alex Cora explains why he didn’t want a longer contract

The Red Sox and manager Alex Cora agreed to a three-year extension last week, but the new contract could have been even longer.

WEEI’s Rob Bradford reported on Jones & Mego with Arcand on Tuesday that the two sides discussed a five-year deal, but that it was Cora who wanted to keep it to three years.

Cora confirmed that during his weekly appearance on the show Wednesday and explained why he opted against a longer contract.

“The boys. The boys are seven. They just turned seven,” Cora said, referring to his twin sons. “In three years, they're going to be 10. We don't know where we're going to be. That's the most important thing. And like I said, there's a lot of stuff that has changed over the course of the year with me, the way we're doing things, and in my house. You see the kids playing baseball and playing soccer. I'm actually staying back today because we're flying home on Friday because school starts next week.

“So, those days are becoming harder and harder, to be honest with you, and I think a five-year commitment for the family was a lot. We don't know what's going to happen in three years. We would love to be here, but I think at the end, my number one team, I've been saying it all along, is the Cora-Felicianos. That's the reality of it. Those boys, man, I'm telling you, they're good for us and our life. I get emotional talking about that, but they're our life. Without them, I don't know. In three years, they’re 10, we’ll see what happens.”

Hard to argue with any of that.
