Christian Fauria: ‘I don’t know why [Patriots] need a day off’

The Patriots had a scheduled off-day from training camp on Wednesday, and WEEI’s Christian Fauria believes it could not have come at a worse time for a team that is far from finding its footing on the offensive side of the ball.

Yes, of course, these off-days are now built-in to the training camp calendar per the current collective bargaining agreement between the players and owners. That does not mean it’s the best thing for the players, according to Fauria.

The former NFL tight end played in the league for 13 seasons, and said on both The Greg Hill Show and Gresh & Fauria on Wednesday that by this time in camp, he would have had at least 10 fully padded practices.

“It is crazy, man,” said the two-time Super Bowl Champion. “I hate to be the old guy that says, ‘Get off my lawn.’ But I just don’t know why they need a day off.

“So yesterday, [Maye] threw a total of 31 passes. 31 [throws during] seven-on-seven, one-on-ones, and team. I don’t count the one-on-ones, I really shouldn’t count the seven-on-sevens. Call it 11 total passes yesterday. 11 total team passes on the first day of padded practices. 22 total passes that matter. 22! That’s nothing! And don’t give me this bullcrap-throw-it-in-the-stupid-net. So half the practice are all drills! All drills and footwork and throwing it into the net and, you know, going over reads, or just standing around. 22 total passes that matter.”

Fauria continued to bemoan the off-day on his own show, Gresh & Fauria.

“They should be doing something today,” he said. “They should be working today ! The Patriots need the work! I am amazed that they are not on the field. It’s amazing! I know that players want, like, their freedom. And they want their rest. And they want some sort of say in how they’re used. But holy crap!

“They got five weeks before the first game. They’re so far behind, they’re so far behind. I’m amazed that they just got the day off. What are they gonna do today? What are they gonna watch? There’s no film to watch.”

The Patriots will be back at practice on Thursday for day seven of training camp.

And a week from Thursday, they will host the Carolina Panthers for their first preseason game of the 2024 season.
